Donington adventurer Laura Hudson is a finalist in Ms Scuba UK to inspire women and raise awareness of marine conservation
Donington’s very own action woman Laura Hudson is currently embarking on her latest challenge - competing to be the very first Ms Scuba UK.
The fitness and dance instructor, fashion designer and adventurer, has twice taken part in TV’s Ninja Warrior, completed multiple Tough Mudders, a 50km trek and cycled across Vietnam and Cambodia.
Last year she decided to try something completely different and set her sights on training to become a ‘professional mermaid.’
She took to it so well that she won the title of Miss Mermaid Lincolnshire - and then went on to become Miss Mermaid UK.
Laura’s taken the challenge of becoming Ms Scuba UK (she says she’s a couple of years too old for the Miss competition) to try to encourage more women to get into scuba diving and raise awareness and the importance of marine conservation.
She made it through to the final, which is in Sheffield on August 16.
She said: “I am fortunate enough to be a finalist for the very first Ms Scuba UK, which is running alongside the highly successful Miss Scuba UK.
“I am raising funds for Project Aware to continue with rising awareness about the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing our waste to save our oceans.
“The competition also supports Deptherapy and Deptherapy education to help give injured service personnel and veterans the chance to scuba dive in specially tailored programmes; and the Motor Neurone Disease Association after a previous contestant was diagnosed just months after competing four years ago. The local charity this year is the Rotherham Hospice.
“I am hoping to make a difference both by inspiring women to take part in scuba diving by trying it myself, as it’s currently a male dominated activity, and also raise awareness about protecting our oceans, which comes in relation to being Miss Mermaid UK.
“I hope to inspire as many people as possible to try new things and push themselves out of their comfort zone to expand on their skills or do something they never thought possible to enrich their lives.
“Being a role model to youngsters is already something I am aware of and wish to continue to push to let them know they can do anything they put their minds to.
“It’s already been a whirlwind year with Miss Mermaid, and I hope the journey can continue!”
