Colourful day in Long Sutton!

Long Sutton was awash with colour when the town’s hockey club hosted the district’s first Colour Run and raised more than £1,000 towards its new Astro pitch.

One hundred runners completed the 5k course, which snaked its way through Cinder Ash Park and the adjacent cricket ground, on Bank Holiday Monday, while spectators cheered them on.

Event organisers Lynne Braginton and Georgina Synnott, of Long Sutton Hockey Club, were thrilled with the turnout to their first charity rainbow run and are now planning to hold another next year.

“It’s been absolutely brilliant,” said Lynne, speaking afterwards. “It was great to see so many people come out to support us and enjoy themselves.

“When you’re trying to fundraise for a sports club, it can often be difficult to get people who aren’t members themselves to get involved, but the Colour Run has been fantastic, there was such a great vibe and it was lovely to see families taking part.

“Because it has been so successful we’ve already decided to hold another run next year - in fact we’re hoping it can become an annual event.”

Long Sutton Hockey Club, established in 1923, is desperately trying to raise £100,000 towards the £250,000 total it will cost to replace its ageing pitch and is organising a series of fundraisers.

Monday’s Colour Run – where competitors were doused in purple, orange and green powder paint at three stations along the route - began with an energetic Clubbercise warm-up, led by instructor Helen Lea.

Long Sutton’s firefighters were then on hand to douse runners before the race was officially set underway by DWB Contractors, who sponsored goody bags for the finishers.

The entertainment continued after the race with a barbecue, crepe station, bar and disco.

Lynne thanked everyone one took part, the event sponsors, firefighters, Shearer’s Butchers and DJ Joe Roulstone for their support, as well as members from Fenland Running Club who also backed the race.

The next fundraising event is an ’80s night, while businesses and individuals can also sponsor squares of the new Astro pitch for £50 each.
