New care home to be built on site of The Birds pub in Halmer Gate, Spalding

A Spalding landmark pub, which closed in December, will be demolished to make way for a new care home.

South Holland District Council planning officers agreed that a new 61-bed home can be built on the site of The Birds in Halmer Gate, which will free up homes and hospital beds, claimed the applicant, Glenholme Healthcare Group and Life Property Construction.

The developer said the home would help towards an “unmet need” with specialised beds and state-of the-art equipment and help elderly residents who require specialist dementia care.

Approving the change of use, officers said the impact on the surrounding area would be “acceptable” and would not result in the loss of light or be overbearing.

Residents’ bedrooms will include en-suite wet rooms, while community lounges and dining rooms will also be provided. The ground floor will contain a reception area, cafe/bar, office and hair salon.

It is understood the home will employ 61 full-time staff and have 23 parking spaces.

The applicant said: “The design of the site makes the best use of the area available whilst providing a high quality environment for the residents of the proposed home.

“The reason for this application […] is consequential upon the recognised and considerable demand for care home accommodation and especially to cater for those people living with dementia.”
