Lincolnshire County Council approves £15million improvements to Spalding A16 roundabouts

Lincolnshire County Council has approved £15 million worth of improvement works to be carried out on two major roundabouts in Spalding.

In a unanimous vote, the executive approved ‘levelling up’ initiative for the Springfields and Greencell roundabouts during Tuesday’s (June 6) meeting.

Plans for the Springfields Roundabout include expanding capacity through more approach lanes on the A16, coupled with extended entry lanes on the A151 approaches.

The Greencell Roundabout upgrades involve junction widening to accommodate dual-lane circulation within the roundabout, with extended two-lane approaches and exits on the A16.

The initial phase of work on the Springfields Roundabout is set to start in September and is slated to last 12 months, whereas the Greencell upgrade will commence in July 2024 and continue until March 2025.

Both projects incorporate a comprehensive overhaul of drainage systems, new surfacing, signage, line markings and lighting columns.

While councillors acknowledged that these developments will significantly benefit the community, Sam Edwards, Head of Highways Infrastructure and Laboratory Services, warned that “there will be a level of disruption” for motorists.

There are currently no plans to install temporary traffic lights along the main highway, but lane closures and potential road closures along minor routes are anticipated.

Coun Richard Davies (Conservative) praised the proposals, stating: “The A16 is probably the predominant HGV route for the county. Something like 30% of all food in the country is processed in that corner, so it is really important that we have good access and transmission routes for goods logistics.

“The big thing that comes out when you talk to businesses and people down there, and in fact, anyone who’s ever driven down the A16 will tell you, the Springfields and Greencells roundabouts are jammed up.”

Both projects are estimated to cost around £15.5 million and are being funded by a mixture of contributions from the government’s Levelling Up Fund and the Boston Development Fund programme.

Pedals – Spalding’s cycle action group - previously called on the county council to include a footbridge in the plans as they feared the works would create a greater risk to cyclists and pedestrians.

However, officers argued that it would be too costly as it would involve the purchase of additional land.
