National Grid to unveil its plans to add more equipment to Bicker Fen substation

Plans to increasing the equipment at a substation will be unveiled during an event next week.

National Grid is looking to add a ‘small transformer’ to the Bicker Fen Substation in order to connect a nearby solar farm to the network.

AGR Renewables was granted planning permission in 2023 to construct a 49MW solar farm in Bicker Fen - which could generate enough power for 18,000 homes according to the developer.

Now, the National Grid is discussing plans about increasing the equipment at its substation during an event on Thursday, November 7, at Bicker Village Hall, in Cemetery Road, from 2pm to 7pm.

Staff will be discussing plans for the transformer - which is expected to connect the solar farm to the grid in October 2025 - which along with traffic management during the works.

Faizaan Patel, National Grid EPC Project Manager, said: “As a regulated business, when a developer requests a new connection to the network, we have a legal obligation to meet their request.

“Our work at Bicker Fen is one of many projects across the country to connect new low-carbon energy sources and help meet the country’s rising demand for power while supporting net zero targets.

“Ahead of starting our work, we encourage the Bicker community to come along to the event which will give residents the chance to find out more about our plans and the measures we’ll have in place to minimise any impact on the local community.”

Lincolnshire has been targeted for a number of energy projects including the Grimsby to Walpole Pylons, 100km underground cables to link a Scottish wind farm to Walpole Substation, Outer Dowsing wind farm and Meridian Solar Farm.

Bicker Fen is also home to the Viking Link Interconnector which was built to bring in and transmit renewable energy between this country and Denmark.
