Spalding and District u3a reaches out in bid to attract new members

An interest and hobbies group for those no longer in full-time employment hopes to attract new members in South Holland.

The monthly meeting of u3a at Surfleet Village Hall takes place on the first Thursday of every month – encouraging people to come and learn, laugh and live.

u3a runs more than 40 interest groups and the monthly meetings showcase the activities, learning and fun which takes place every day.

The group’s aims are for those who come along to make friends, enjoy existing hobbies and pick up new ones covering everything from writing, history and photography to bowls, gardening and dolls house miniaturists.

Members meet regularly for dining, lunch and friendship groups and a newly formed social committee arranges frequent special events such as trips to the theatre and quiz nights complete with a fish and chip supper.

Speaking ahead of national u3a week, current Chair Christina Tyler, said: “Our members have a huge range of interests, and it’s inspiring to see everyone sharing their knowledge and passions with others at our many groups.

“There really is something for everyone and you can be as involved as you like.

“We’re also a really sociable bunch and there are lots of opportunities to meet new people, enjoy lunches and dinners and explore more of our local area.

“If you’re new to u3a, please come along to one of our monthly meetings to find out more and see which groups you might be interested in joining – you’ll be very welcome!”

Spalding and District u3a’s monthly meetings take place from 1.30pm on the first Thursday of every month at Surfleet Village Hall, with a guest speaker, followed by hot drinks, biscuits, and the chance to talk to members.

All are welcome except at the AGM which is held at the October meeting and is for members only.
