Gusts of 77mph recorded in Holbeach as thunder storms create problems in Deeping St Nicholas, Moulton and Moulton Seas End




Firefighters were called to protect one home - while flooding was seen in another village as South Holland was battered by thunder storms over the weekend.

Thunder and lightning rolled over the district on Sunday as Saturday’s heatwave gave way to heavy rain and wind gusts reaching nearly 80mph.

Figures released by the Met Office show that wind gusts reached 77mph in Holbeach – which is high for wind associated with thunder storms – along with 28.4mm of rain within a short period of time.

There were 40,160 lightning strikes over the UK on Sunday with 19,241 which were detected over Lincolnshire.

Hail was also reported by residents in the Holbeach St Marks area after the thunder storms which arrived during the afternoon and came in waves.

Firefighters from Crowland were also called to Deeping St Nicholas after the storm had damaged a home in New Road at 3.30pm.

A spokesman said: “At 15:32, the Crowland crew attended a house on New Road in Deeping St Nicholas where the storm had caused roof damage.

“They used a ladder to make roof tiles safe and placed a tarpaulin sheet on the roof.

“Water had also entered the property from flooding but this was dealt with by the householder.”

Flash flooding was also reported in the centre of Moulton following the deluge of rain which accompanied the storms.

Large puddles of water were seen around the Shivean Gate area – creating problems for motorists.

A number of homes were also left without power in Moulton Seas End following the storms.

Homeowners reported that the power was lost at about 4pm and did not return until 3.30am.

It has been reported that about 89 homes were affected.
