Crowland Wellness and Leisure Centre proving popular, mystery continues to surround felled tree, schoolgirl to volunteer in South Africa
A new gym is proving to be so popular that it will be limiting its opening to the public.
After years of planning, Crowland Leisure and Wellbeing Centre finally opened its doors earlier this week.
Crowland Parish Council discussed the new facilities at Postland Road at its meeting earlier on Monday.
Coun Wayne Glenton, who has worked on the project on behalf of the council, said the gym effectively opened on Monday.
To begin with, members who have already signed up are being invited down in groups to try it out.
A total of 100 invites went out on Monday, with more to be issued throughout the coming weeks.
Coun Glenton said this will give staff a few months to work out the gym’s capacity before it opens completely.
“The real headline is that it is ready,” he said.
“There are a few cosmetic issues such as getting mirrors, but a lot has happened and it is ready.”
Coun David Ringham said there will be an official opening of the gym at some stage, but he isn’t yet sure when it will take place.
He added: “Everybody who has been along has been impressed.”
Coun Bryan Alcock asked if the gym’s website will be updated as he doesn’t believe it currently offers a lot of information.
Coun Glenton confirmed plans are in place to do so.
- Mystery continues to surround the removal of a tree on parish council land.
The Crowland tree, which had a protection order, is believed to have been felled at the end of January.
At Monday’s meeting, council chairman David Kempton read out a letter which queried what work councillors are doing to investigate the incident.
Coun Kempton said: “We posted a response on Facebook and that is all we can do at this point.”
He added that he is continuing to discuss the matter with the district council.
- The council also suggested having its eight new chalet bungalows re-valued so their prices are accurate in today’s market.
The first residents moved into the bungalows last month.
- Councillors are seeking to fill a parish council vacancy. With full elections a few months away, current councillors have the authority to elect any new members themselves for now.
- Support will be given to a 17-year-old student who will be volunteering in South Africa.
Councillors were asked if they would donate to the girl, who has already hosted fish and chip nights, raffles, dog walks and coffee morning fundraisers herself. She needs £2,950 for the trip, which will last from August of this year until August 2023. The parish council agreed to provide a donation because of the hard work she has already put in.
