Sutton Bridge shooter misses out on Olympic final

Sutton Bridge clay shooting star Aaron Heading was in superb form on the second day of the Olympic Men's Shooting Trap competition in Japan - but his performance was not enough to secure a final place.

The volunteer coastguard shot 119 on day 2 in Asaka, not missing any in his last two rounds. Unfortunately, the exceptionally high scores throughout the event meant he didn’t make the final.

On a disappointing first day on Wednesday, Heading shot 23, 22 and 24 to register 69 and was placed 28th out of 29 competitors.

On Thursday he shot 23, 22, 24 and then two perfect round of 25, but ended up finishing in 23rd place, five points off the lead and three off qualifying.

Heading, who has three World Championship medals and was 2010 Commonwealth Games champ, has been a part of Team GB for 24 years, but this was his first Olympics.

He almost lost his leg in a 2014 motorbike crash and so missed out on the last Olympics in Rio.
