Saracens Head’s Heidi takes on riding challenge for Bone Cancer Research Trust
A 12-year-old schoolgirl is saddling up to raise valuable funds for a cancer charity.
Heidi Woodrow, from Saracen’s Head, has signed up to Cantering for a Cure for Primary Bone Cancer Patients organised by the Bone Cancer Research Trust, and has pledged to ride her pony 100km during September.
As it’s the school holidays the Spalding High School pupil has started her fundraiser ahead of schedule and has already smashed her target to raise £150.
Heidi, who lives with parents Chris and Sara, and brothers Seth (13) and Jack (10), has already been out several times on her beloved pony Molly, a 13-year-old skewbald cob cross, which she has owned for three years.
Sara said Heidi was keen to get involved with the challenge and raise money for a good cause after a post popped up on Facebook about it.
‘As soon as I mentioned it Heidi wanted to sign up,’ she added. ‘With it being the school holidays a lot of people have already started completing their distances early and it’s encouraging Heidi to get outside and ride every day while she’s off school.
‘I’m accompanying her, either riding, cycling or walking and the other day we covered eight kilometres on the lanes around where we live, that was quite a long way. Other days we usually do about five kilometres.’
The charity says that every £150 raised will fund one of its researchers for one day, and Heidi has already ridden Molly more than 31km, and raised £419 in donations to date.
‘We’re very proud of Heidi for taking part and wanting to support such a worthy cause.
‘It’s a big commitment to go out every day, but now that she’s already met her fundraising target she’s got to keep going and complete it!’
