Spalding Massage Therapy owner William Ruddle looked for bed as he prepares to welcome Ukrainian refugee family into Pinchbeck home

A massage clinic owner's call for help was answered as he prepares to host three Ukrainian refugees.

William Ruddle, who owns Spalding Massage Therapy in Pinchbeck, is set to welcome mother Natalia, 11-year-old Christina and five-year-old Vadyn into his family home.

However, he needed to acquire something for them to sleep on first – and asked for anyone with a spare three-foot single bed to get in touch with him.

He has now announced that someone will be able to supply him with one - and has also had offers from people willing to provide bedding for both children.

Mr Ruddle was already looking into ways of helping victims of the war in Ukraine before a Government refugee scheme was introduced.

He joined a Facebook page and was put in touch with Natalia’s family – who live in a village in the south of Ukraine.

South Holland District Council is required to inspect any property which will house refugees, and it is therefore difficult to place a timeline on when the family may come over. When they do, Natalia, Christina and Vadyn will have two bedrooms and their own bathroom.

“For me, it’s a sense of moral duty. Also, as a Christian family, we feel we have an opportunity to help other strangers in the world – which is a good thing to be done,” Mr Ruddle said.

“Not everyone has the accommodation, so that’s why I posted on Facebook about the bed. Whilst you might not be able to give up a room for six months, everybody can help in some way.”

So far, contact between Mr Ruddle and Natalia’s family has been achieved via Google Translate as she doesn’t speak any English.

“The sense we have is that they’re a hard-working family that are just torn apart by what’s happening in their country,” Mr Ruddle added.
