Lifeguard's at Bourne Outdoor Pool saved child's life
Young lifeguards have saved a child’s life after a boy started drowning at Bourne Outdoor Pool.
When Logan Ward and Dan Malickis, who are both 18, trained to become lifeguards they learned everything necessary to save a person in danger.
However, they never thought they would have to put it into practice.
Last week when a young child swam too far into the deep end at Bourne Outdoor Pool they had to quickly react to a life or death situation.
Logan, who was volunteering for his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award while staying with his aunt in West Pinchbeck, said: “The boy was bobbing up and down and struggling to swim.
“I had to dive in and get him to the poolside. After that he fell unconscious.
“In training you do use dummies and have the knowledge of how to carry people so in an actual incident you have to focus on that.”
Dan heard Logan’s emergency call and immediately called an ambulance.
While the pair would have preferred the boy to have not been in danger they both described it as a ‘proud moment’ knowing they had saved his life.
Dan, from Bourne, said: “It felt like being part of a bigger machine. We played the initial part and then the paramedics took over.
“As long as everyone does what they can and should.”
The boy lost consciousness for four minutes after being pulled from the water but when the paramedics arrived, he had woken up. He was checked over but didn’t need to be taken to hospital.
An additional challenge came as the lifeguards had to remove swimmers from the pool in the Abbey Lawn, until it was safe, which fellow lifeguard Kieran Oglesbee assisted with.
They said the swimmers at the pool that day were very understanding.
Dan said: “It’s always in your mind it could happen and it’s part of the job.”
The following day the boys checked in with the family to make sure they were OK.
