Hopes of a speed reduction at Austendyke Road and Broadgate, Weston Hills, after county road safety body confirms plans for traffic survey

A change in speed limit at a crossroads in Weston Hills where a car crashed into a house is under consideration.

Lincolnshire highways officers have signalled their intention to take on board concerns from villagers worried about traffic speeds at the junction of Austendyke Road and Broadgate.

Just over four months ago, a drink driver ended up crashing into the bedroom of a house and losing control of the car they were driving when they hit another car parked in Austendyke Road on January 29.

Villager Stella Cummins (75) said: "We've had that many accidents in recent years where cars have left the road and gone into people's hedges.

"It's usually traffic coming along Austendyke Road from Spalding that are involved in an accident with drivers pulling out of Broadgate.

"It's 40mph through Weston Hills so it would be a great idea if it was reduced to 30mph."

Coun Chris Dicks, chairman of Weston Parish Council (which covers Weston Hills), said: "The problem is more speed-related than with the junction itself.

"The view for drivers is obscured slightly by an old blacksmith's shed but if the cars are doing 40mph, they should have enough time to see the junction and slow down.

"But when drivers hesitate before pulling out into a main road, it can become a problem for traffic along the main road already.

"I'd personally like to see the speed limit reduced because, in my opinion, the junction is in a built-up area that warrants a 30mph speed limit.

"The trouble is you can put whatever speed limit you like on a road and drivers will still exceed it.

Graeme Butler, of Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: "In light of the concerns raised by the parish council, we have asked the highways team to investigate whether a reduction in the speed limit is appropriate.

"As part of this, they will need to carry out a survey to ascertain the mean speed of traffic which will be a key factor in our considerations.

"If the criteria for a speed reduction is met, the process by which the legal order is amended will then be progressed.

"However, at this stage we are unable to confirm how long this process will take."
