Spalding Amateur Dramatics and Operatic Society presents Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em at South Holland Centre with talented cast and a few whoopsies

An amateur production based on a classic television show will be bringing hilarity, mishaps and a few whoopsies to a town’s theatre.

Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em is being performed by SADOS – Spalding Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society – at the South Holland Centre, Spalding.

Featuring disastrous escapades from the hapless character based on Frank Spencer it will run from Wednesday, November 8 until Saturday November 11 at 7.30pm.

Producer Kay Wood said: “I have produced a lot over the years and this is very much based on the television series by Raymond Allen – written by Guy Unsworth – this amateur production is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French Ltd."

With a talented cast of six the show remains true to the themes of the television shows – with recognisable traits from the popular 1970s series starring Michael Crawford.

Mrs Wood said: “People will notice it has stuck to quite a few themes – mishaps and disasters – and even some roller skates – one of the iconic scenes people remember.”

The central character will be played by Charlie Russell and Mrs Wood said: “There are a lot of Spencerisms but it is very much about bringing himself into the role.”

SADOS is one of the first amateur groups in the UK to put the show on and Mrs Wood added: “The character Frank Spencer is on the entire duration of the play – we have a very talented cast of six.

“There are well-known faces who have been in SADOS as producers, directors and performers.

“It will be a debut in a drama for Geran Jackson.”

The group has a history going back more than 150 years and needs help in finding a venue to rehearse in.

Mrs Wood said: “During lockdown we lost our base – years ago we used the Gentlemen’s Society, first with dramas and the musicals and we became an operatic society – we are one of the oldest drama groups in the UK.

“But now is very sad as we are looking for a base – we were very lucky to use The Shed on Monks House Lane but we are now homeless.

“We are very grateful to them and to West Pinchbeck Hall and St Margaret’s Hall Quadring.”

The group needs storage space and room for rehearsal and Mrs Wood said: “We are trying to find new premises and we are now relying on friends of the society to house things for us.

“We need to find a permanent base and to be in a better financial position to put on revues, pantomimes and dramas.

“We are trying to keep local live theatre alive – otherwise it will die out – for the actors and communities.

“It is a great community thing.”
