Long Sutton Parish Council chairman hits back at 'negative publicity' over Spalding Flower Parade decision
A parish council chairman said he preferred to spend taxpayer money on local events after being ‘knocked’ for not contributing to the revived Spalding Flower Parade.
Coun John Clarey said Long Sutton Parish Council had ‘negative publicity’ surrounding the decision not to give £1,000 to next year’s parade.
Speaking at Thursday’s meeting, Coun Clarey said: “The council do their own events for the people of Long Sutton like we did with the Queen’s Jubilee, and Christmas and we have got plans for the King’s coronation.
"The parish council always likes to spend the parishioners’ money in their own patch and not in Spalding.”
He said the council’s events are free and saves people from travelling to Spalding - ‘especially as some can’t get there’.
Christmas light show
The council has agreed to underwrite the costs of a Christmas light show which will be taking place around St Mary’s Church in December.
Organisers have been urged to continue fundraising.
Coronation beacon
The council confirmed that the town beacon will be lit on May 5 to mark the coronation of King Charles III. There will also be fireworks on the night.
A fair has also been booked for Sunday, May 7, and that the council has applied for the road to be closed.
