Megan's £1,400 fundraiser
Twelve-year-old schoolgirl Megan Reid put her best foot forward at the weekend and raised more than £1,400 for charity by walking ten miles.
The youngster completed the route from Sutton Bridge to King’s Lynn on Saturday in aid of Scotty’s Little Soldiers - a King’s Lynn-based charity dedicated to supporting children who have lost a parent serving in the British Armed Forces.
Megan, of Holbeach, said she wanted to help other children and was inspired to fundraise for Scotty’s Little Soldiers because one of her best friends at University Academy Holbeach is from a forces family.
“It went really well,” she said afterwards, “I really enjoyed doing the walk and would definitely like to do some more fundraising.
“I like walking and I like cycling too, so maybe I’ll do something different next time.”
Megan’s parents Sonia and Darren were delighted with how things went on the day and are incredibly proud of Megan’s selfless attitude in wanting to help others.
“Megan had a great day,” added Sonia. “The weather was ideal – a bit of breeze and not too hot.
“She walked the whole way; she started at 10am, took about an hour’s break for lunch at the Victory Pub in Clenchwarton and arrived in King’s Lynn at around 3pm and still had bags of energy left.
“It was lovely as friends and family came along to support her, many walking part of the way with her too – including her younger sister Issy - so she was never alone.
“We’re so proud of her, especially since this fundraiser was all completely her own idea. She has been very determined all the way through.”
The family is still collecting sponsorship, but anticipates Megan’s final fundraising total will be around £1,450, which will go directly to the children of bereaved servicemen and women.
Sonia thanked everyone who supported Megan and made a donation.
