MP's hope in fight against Spalding parking plan
Controversial plans to cut town centre parking in Spalding are still ‘only options’ according to assurances received by the town’s MP.
Sir John Hayes is looking to arrange a meeting with county highways portfolio holder Richard Davies over the proposed ‘active travel zone’.
The plan would remove parking from The Crescent, Broad Street, Sheep Market and Double Street to make way for cyclists and pedestrians.
The one-way system in The Crescent would also be extended down to Sheep Market for an 18-month trial.
Sir John has been assured that there is no firm commitment on the scheme – which is out for public consultation until May 16.
Traders have said the town is on "life support" and that this new proposal could kill off their hopes of a post-Covid recovery.
Sir John said: “At this time – of all times – we need to be backing small businesses in Spalding.
“The Government is committed to the High Street but we have got to live that commitment.”
He said that Coun Davies is “clearly open for discussion” and is confident that the plans can be fought.
Sir John added: “I am confident that we can get a solution that works for everyone.”
