Plans in pipeline for Long Sutton's The Bull Hotel

Plans are in the pipeline to transform one of South Holland’s derelict eyesores.

Owners of The Bull Hotel in Long Sutton are due to be submitting a planning application to improve the site before the end of the year.

Fencing and safety works have been undertaken at the hotel, which stands at the entrance of the town’s Market Place.

The Bull Hotel, which welcomed The Duke of Edinburgh and actor James Robertson Justice in its heyday, has stood empty for many years, prompting calls for improvement.

Planning application agent Alan Finch said: “The property has been recently purchased by a local businessman with the specific intention of carrying out the refurbishment and regeneration of this prominent site.

“This site has suffered from anti-social behaviour including vandalism, arson attacks, and habitual fly-tipping on the previously open land to the rear of the building.

“The new owner has secured the building and the site whilst plans are prepared for the redevelopment of the site.

“There has been consultation in recent months with South Holland Planning Department, including the conservation officer. That consultation has included site visits to assess the external and internal condition of the building.

“A structural engineer has carried out an inspection to determine the current condition of the building which will inform a detailed scheme of refurbishment and that is being prepared.

“Given that this building has been derelict for a period in excess of 30 years the new owner is keen to see the refurbishment under way and we are aiming to submit a planning application before the end of 2021. We look forward to support in this project from the Parish Council and the Civic Society of Long Sutton.”

Jack Tyrrell, who represents the town on South Holland District and Lincolnshire County Councils, has been reassured that work to repair guttering and safety fencing is taking place.

Coun Tyrrell said: “The man who owns it has every intention of doing the work. He has done a bit of work. I am looking forward to him getting started.”

News that a planning application will be submitted has been welcomed by Long Sutton Civic Society.

Spokesman Tim Machin said: “We are delighted to hear that the owners are planning early work to secure the site and will be preparing a scheme for planning later in the year.

“We would be very interested in seeing what that entails and if appropriate working with the owner to ensure that the right solution is achieved for Long Sutton.”

Long Sutton Parish Council is delighted with the news that there are plans for The Bull.

Council chairman John Clarey said: “This is the news that Long Sutton has been waiting for. Anything to improve what is there.”
