Spalding reporter Bridie Short shares her top tips for Veganuary
As 2023 began, many people will have chosen to take part in ‘Veganuary’ - but how about some advice from a seasoned non-meat eater? We asked reporter Bridie Short to share her top tips...
'Veganuary' is an annual challenge that encourages participants to follow a vegan diet throughout the month of January - so it's the time when many people join me in not eating meat.
Personally I have never taken part in 'Veganuary' - but I do live a pescetarian lifestyle, which involves a similar diet to vegetarians, with the addition of fish.
I decided to ditch meat nearly two years ago and don't regret it at all.
This was made after finding an interest in the diet and lifestyle and doing some research on what it is all about.
One of my sisters is vegetarian, so she shared some of her wise tips and personal experiences with me too.
I have found it quite easy to fit into my life and make all the necessary changes.
There were definitely times I struggled to adapt, however - for example my first meat free Christmas.
Something I have noticed is the quick judgment and stereotype some people have with the diet and lifestyle.
This is probably a similar experience faced by those who choose to live a vegan diet.
As the lifestyle becomes more popular I think there are better resources out there to educate people and provide the best advice.
If people are worried about getting judged for choosing this lifestyle, some advice I would offer is, it's your decision not theirs - they're not doing it, so they don't need to worry.
One key thing I would say to those thinking about making the change would be - there is no rush, take it at a pace that will be manageable for you personally.
Before I cut all types of meat out I decided to not eat beef or pork to distinguish if I liked the change. Even making a small change would have considerable benefits to your health and the environment.
Personally, my love of cheese and chocolate are stopping me from going vegan, however as vegan food is constantly evolving, never say never.
When eating out I have noticed more restaurants and businesses are catering for the vegan diet, this definitely helps as it gives you better options and variety.
One restaurant I would recommend is Wagamama - which has a branch in Peterborough and has a separate vegan menu with a variety of Asian food to choose from.
When choosing what recipes to make at home, try to make what you would normally have with non meat substitutes.
In my house everyone enjoys Quorn chicken pieces, even the meat eaters!
Supermarkets I would recommend are Aldi, Sainsbury's and Asda - who all have good ranges of things to try.
Overall, I think everyone should give it a go at least once, the changes can be gradual if you like and you might find it easier than you think.
The 'Veganuary' website has a variety of recipes and information to help you on your journey.
If you need help with a recipe book, 'Vegan on the Go' has lots of great recipes which are fast and affordable and can be purchased online.
