Friends of Spalding Station submit plans to South Holland District Council for platform artwork
An application has been made to put up a mural on a railway station wall to commemorate war veterans.
The Friends of Spalding Station group have submitted a plan to South Holland District Council for artwork to go onto a board and placed on platform one.
The design is in homage to the fallen and depicts soldiers against a backdrop of poppies, planes and the wording Lest We Forget.
Jan Whitbourn, vice-chairman of the Spalding Royal British Legion and a station adopter, is keen for the proposal to be given the green light.
She said: “I think it is going to be absolutely amazing.
“Not just for the Royal British Legion - they will be as proud as I am - but also for our community and people catching the train to see it.
“We know Remembrance is so important to a lot of people.”
The group has worked with an artist on the design which is 8450mm x 1500 mm in size and will be painted onto a board which can be taken down or changed as appropriate.
Jan added: “To me this is a beautiful design and I think people in our community will love it.
“I am so proud of it.
“I think when it all comes together it will look amazing.”
Spalding prides itself on the way it honours its servicemen and women during the Remembrance period.
A number of services are held each year, including a parade at the town cemetery and the annual Sunday service of Remembrance at the war memorial in Ayscoughfee Gardens.
Jan added: “It will be painted onto boards so it is something we can change.
“It is an improvement to what we have got.
“I think it will look awesome.”
