Readers give their views on notorious Weston Hills crossroads
Fears that someone is going to be killed on a notorious crossroads have been shared by readers in the wake of the latest collisions.
A total of 39 crashes have taken place on the Mill Drove North, Clay Lake Bank, Old Fendyke Road and Fulney Drove crossroads in Weston Hills in the last two years - which has prompted calls for action.
A motorist was taken to hospital with serious injuries on February 4 after two vehicles were involved in a collision on Clay Lake Bank. But emergency services were called back to the area just days later when four vehicles were involved in a collision.
Coun Anthony Casson has been calling for action to be taken on the crossroads - including adding a stop sign to the crossroads.
Here readers give their views on the junction.
Sarah Wright posted on our Facebook page: “I generally think someone will die in the next accident. They drive like maniacs and with the camber in the road now it’s dangerous.”
Johanne Seymour has suggested adding cameras to promote safety.
She posted: “Why not just put cameras in for both average speed and to catch people on their phones. The majority of the accidents are happening because people speed and are on their phones instead of watching the road and driving carefully.
“The problem is the punishments are either non existent or aren't harsh enough for driving whilst on your phone, so there's no deterrent. Personally I think being caught on your phone whilst driving should be an automatic driving ban for 30 days for the first offence and then increased to six months for a second offence and then five years for a third offence.”
Wayne Smith feels that motorists are just not paying attention to the ‘massive’ give-way sign at the crossroads.
He posted: “I have nearly had so many accidents there where you think there not going to stop and behold they don’t. I can’t see why this junction is such a problem.”
A call to sort out the potholes and dips in the area’s road surfaces has been raised by Marie Gambell.
She posted: “We don't need to reduce the speed limit, we all need to use our common sense and learn the width of your car - too many people driving in the middle of the road towards oncoming traffic.”
Jan Horton said: “I've lived here 43yrs and the only time it was better was when they shut the end of mill drove off. People use it as a rat run to miss the roundabout at Applegreen.”
A suggestion for improving the junction has been made by Andy Phoenyx.
He said: “The best method to correct this junction would be to offset the two roads so it’s a staggered junction stopping vehicles from physically being able to continue across the main road at speed. And better signage. Maybe a junction in 150 yards sign and I’d agree with a stop sign.”
