Spalding farmer becomes biggest fundraiser for Blood Cancer UK after completing London Marathon

A farmer who was inspired to take part in a marathon has become the biggest fundraiser for his chosen charity.

Ben Smith, from Spalding, handed over a cheque for £18,811 to Blood Cancer UK after competing last year’s London Marathon to bring awareness about the disease which affected his friend Steve LeMotte.

Mr Smith presented the cheque at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground where Mr LeMotte - who was diagnosed with myeloma in 2023 - volunteers.

He said: “Steve is an incredible man who has taken his diagnosis head on.

“I was so proud to have run the marathon for Steve and beat the drum about blood cancer."

Mr Smith was inspired to run in aid of his friend who is a keen hockey player and has maintained a positive attitude since the diagnosis.

Myeloma, also known as multiple myeloma, is a type of blood cancer that can be treated but cannot be cured yet.

The charity’s fundraising manager, Rachel Mann-Bradbury, said: "Blood cancer is the UK’s fifth most common cancer, and we are deeply grateful for his determination and the support of everyone who contributed to Ben’s fundraising. “
