Investigation due at 'unsafe' Spalding road
An investigation is due to take place at Park Road in Spalding today as highways and water board officials try to decide what to so with an 'unsafe' dip that has caused it to be closed to traffic.
Highways officers say they were forced to close Park Road between Winsover Road and Pennygate after feeling that a dip in the road had worsened.
Repairs were only carried out to the site by Anglian Water last summer.
A spokesman for Anglian Water said its sewer technicians had found ‘no issues’ and passed the matter back to highways. However, Anglian Water’s ‘water teams’ were also thought to have been investigating the state of the road.
Highways said that Anglian Water is expected on site today (Thursday).
It’s not known how long the closure will be needed for.
A county highways spokesman said: “We want to get it open as soon as possible, but we have to make sure it’s safe and want to get to the bottom of what’s causing the ground issue before we can do that.”
Several readers pleaded with highways and Anglian Water to finally fix the issue - with one describing it as ‘more like a sink hole’ than a dip and many frustrated at repeated closures.
Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, who represents Spalding Wygate ward on South Holland District Council said he sympathised with Anglian Water as it would face pressure to keep any road closures to the shortest possible amount of time.
He also said that similar issues are facing roads across the county.
Coun Gambba-Jones said: “When it is closed it’s a major, major blockage on the traffic flows in Spalding.”
He added: “It is disappointing, of course it is, but it is not unique.
“I think you have to give Anglian Water the benefit of the doubt. I am sure they would rather not be re-doing work like that.”
