South Holland and District Council chairman praises organisers of Mouton Celebration Committee for D-Day event

A lantern parade through a village took place yesterday to mark D-Day.

Walkers with their lanterns paraded through Moulton before lighting the beacon at 9.15pm to commemorate the 80th anniversary of this important operation.

Chairman of South Holland and District Council, Andrew Woolf has praised the work of the Moulton Celebration Committee in organising the poignant tribute.

Further celebrations to mark D-Day and the winning of the Second World War take place in the village tomorrow (Saturday, June 8).

Coun Woolf said: “I was really pleased to see so many villages putting on events right across the district.

“Those that had beacons lit them and if we could have had a drone we would have been able to have seen all the beacons lit.

“It is very important and we should never ever forget the two world wars, in particular the significance of the 80th anniversary yesterday.”

Youngsters, such as Archie Morant, joined the parade wearing his great uncle’s medals and proudly represented their family members and were joined by community groups.

Coun Woolf added: “We have to continue to remember all those that sacrificed their lives for our freedom today which can often be taken for granted.

“It brings back a stark and harsh reminder how lucky we are and to pay respects to those who have fallen or fought.

“The importance is that the date and occasion should never be forgotten and well done to all the organisers who put on the events.”

Steven Adcock is a member of the committee and he said: “About 200 people came along so we did well for a small village.

“Tomorrow we have got military vehicles and 40s vehicles and a singer.

“There will be refreshments in the community centre, military memorabilia and a ticket only 40s dance sold out already.

“We decided as a village if things needed remembering we need to do it.”
