Long Sutton Horse and Pony Show at Cinder Ash Park goes ahead as wind saves event from being cancelled

With temperatures as high as 27C, it was the wind that saved a popular animal show from being cancelled over the weekend.

The Long Sutton Horse and Pony show took place at Cinder Ash Park on Sunday (June 22) amid concerns from social media users about the welfare of animals in the heat.

However, gusty winds providing a breeze and shady areas meant the popular show could take place - with both humans and animals able to shelter from the sun.

Organiser Dawn Clarke said: “Various people on Facebook were calling us to cancel.

“It was the wind that saved us although a couple of trade stands lost their gazebos.

“The dog show had shade and people watching were in the shade of the trees.”

Although entries were lower, this had been anticipated by organisers, which included Rachel Hartopp, Simon Clarke and Lisa Kerwood.

Dawn said: “It went better than expected and people made the right choices for their animals.

“Horses and dogs had access to air conditioning and water.

“As Saturday was so hot and people would be preparing their horses for Sunday I was wondering how many people would come - but they did.”

The show is a popular event in the calendar with judge’s rosettes awarded to owners showcasing their ponies, horses and dogs.

The oldest competitor was a 36-year-old pony.

Dawn said: “A highlight for me was the quality of horses entered into the show.

“We are a local town and yet the quality of competitors was lovely to see.

“The best bit for me is seeing the families getting together to watch and there was a great age range who came along.”

Organisers are hoping that members of the community will suggest good causes that could benefit from funds raised at the event.

Dawn said: “We look at how much money we have got and will make a decision after the show.

“After paying for toilets, security, rosettes, first aid - we don't make a lot of profit.

“We would welcome any suggestions for Long Sutton charities.”

The show will be returning next year with a date in June to be confirmed.
