'Flexyweek' allows Spalding Grammar School students to take part in activities at home and abroad

From exploring caves and building rockets to scaling 1,800ft mountains in cable cars, Spalding Grammar School students enjoyed a wild week of activities as part of the school's scheme.

A choice of activities and residential trips were presented to students, while year ten pupils took on their second week of work experience and year twelve received assistance with "post A Level decision making".

Assistant head Richard Smith said: "With many schools increasingly having to cut their provision for extra-curricular and wider learning, Spalding Grammar School are extremely proud that they still offer these opportunities to students."

Year seven students could travel to Spain, France or Wales or alternatively take part in an activity week closer to home at Tallington Lakes where they could try climbing, abseiling, dry-slope skiing and other activities.

Students who travelled abroad also enjoyed a jam packed week which consisted of visiting hot-spots such as the Eiffel Tower and exploring historical Spanish towns.

Year eight pupils enjoyed in-school activities as well as trips to Ferry Meadows and Duxford while year 9's took on a range of team building workshops, with RAF members joining for one of the days.

On the the final day of the week, students faced a 10 or 20 mile run to raise money for the school's Parents and Friends Association.

Mr Smith said: "It enables students and staff to push themselves to achieve a personal goal outside of the academic workspace, everyone's ethic to push on and encourage each other was exemplary."

The school also saw the end of GSCE and A Level exams for most students in which the school exams' officer, Mrs Victoria Kirkwood, managed a busy season with 4,155 exams being sat.

Mr Smith said: "It would be safe to suggest that everyone slept well after what was a thoroughly eventful, challenging and enjoyable week."
