Jail threat for Spalding man who racially abused police officer in Boston and made pipe bomb threat

A man who racially abused a police officer and threatened to plant a pipe bomb has been warned he could face prison.

Vitalijs Ozolins hurled a torrent of abuse – including the N-word – towards Pc Gorman at Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital on New Year’s Day.

Police were detalning the teenager due to fears for his safety.

On Wednesday, Prosecutor Turan Sunat told Boston Magistrates’ Court Ozolins had used a number of racial slurs towards the officer, also calling him a four-letter profanity and declaring: “Only the white men may touch me.”

The defendant (19) also threatened to plant a pipe bomb at a police station, Mr Sunat added.

A statement written by Pc Gorman was read out in court.

“This form of abuse is not only wrong but mentally debilitating,” it read. “My identity has been used against me.

“This is morally wrong. A person’s skin colour should never be used in such a demeaning way.”

In defence, Daven Naghen explained Ozolins had been suffering from mental health problems, adding ‘clearly his behaviour had escalated’.

“In context, this was the reason he had been detailed by police,” Mr Naghen said.

“He was asking police to behead him and give him an overdose. He made threats to kill himself.”

Mr Naghen added his client had ‘expressed remorse’ at his actions.

A Probation Service representative requested the case be adjourned for Ozolins – who pleaded guilty to causing racially aggravated abuse – to receive a full mental health assessment.

The defendant, of Royce Road, Spalding, was released on unconditional bail but must return to the court for sentencing on December 20.

“There’s still a threat you can go to prison for this,” District Judge Peter Veits told Ozolins.
