Lack of funds and volunteers means Spalding In Bloom may be on hold

Spalding In Bloom may not be happening this year - due to finances and a lack of volunteers to oversee the project.

Spalding Town Forum chairman Coun Rob Gibson explained the situation at last Tuesday’s meeting (January 30), relaying a message from Coun Mark Le Sage who was unable to attend after being involved in a collision while driving.

“He (Coun Le Sage) has been in contact with a couple of people looking at the in bloom baskets.” Coun Gibson said.

“As far as he is aware there’s no councilor at this point who has put themselves forward to oversee Spalding in Bloom, which is what’s needed.

“He’s not personally in a position at the moment to take it on, but if any one else is able to take it on and get volunteers and the money together he’ll be more than happy to help them along.”

Coun Gibson added the issue of funding.

He continued: “I have raised the question about money and I think we might unfortunately miss the flowers for this year.

“But I know there are some pots of money and work going on in the background to get it into position for next year.”

Former councillor Christine Lawton reminded the forum how the event got done in the days of late councillor Angela Newton.

“Speaking as president of the Johnson Community Hospital League of Friends, I follow in the august footsteps of Coun Newton,” she said.

“In passing, if I could say, that if Angela Newton was still here Spalding in Bloom would be flourishing and we’d all be grateful for her efforts, as her efforts were phenomenal.

“In Bloom, that Spalding enjoyed for so many years was largely down to her efforts. I was a willing volunteer in those days and we worked our socks off and it was very successful.”

Spalding In Bloom had enjoyed some success over the years including scooping a gold award in 2014.
