Councils buy up land in Holbeach to expand South Lincolnshire Food Enterprise Zone project




Council chiefs have bought up 28 acres of land in Holbeach to expand the South Lincolnshire Food Enterprise Zone project.

The site is to the north west of the town, near Peppermint Roundabout, and will form the second phase of the 'FEZ' - which aims to make the area a hub for the agri-tech sector.

The purchase was a joint effort between South Holland District Council and Lincolnshire County Council.

A statement from Lincolnshire County Council said: "The additional 28 acre site is strategically important in safeguarding the delivery of this prestigious development which will generate employment opportunities and investment to the area. It will provide the scale of development needed to ensure that the agri-food sector, so fundamental to this local economy, can flourish by creating high quality business space."

It added: "The FEZ is gaining national recognition as providing an ideal environment for companies involved in innovation for the food sector; providing bespoke facilities and a hub for R&D and collaboration.

"The FEZ will cement South Lincolnshire's reputation as a major centre for agri-tech, boasting a high concentration of cutting-edge companies, cultivating innovation in areas such as robotics, automation, well-being, low carbon and packaging."

The existing businesses currently trading on the site, Frontier and Sands Agricultural Machinery, will both remain and continue to run from their existing premises.

Phase one of the project has already seen the University of Lincoln establish a new 'Centre of Excellence' on the site - and the county council is beginning work on a 'hub' building to offer 'managed workspace' for small agri-tech businesses to use.
