The Thursday evening language club starts again tomorrow (Thursday) at the Vista centre in Spalding after the summer break.

There is also a class on Thursday, September 20 and then on the first and third Thursdays of every month.

It is a free drop-in class funded by St Mary and St Nicolas Church for anyone who has English as a second language. They also confidentially help people to write letters and forms in English and explain letters and forms written in English.

Teacher Martin Whitfield and helpers are at the centre from 7.15pm until 9pm for language club and people can drop by when they can.

There are free refreshments and sessions are friendly and fun. People coming to the group might have no English at all, or they may speak English well but lack written skills.

Or perhaps people coming to the group just lack confidence in speaking English when shopping, paying bills and arranging housing, for example. Volunteers try to help people in whatever way they need help.

The next few sessions will look at how to fill in forms and cope with a job or other interview, passing on information to doctors and schools, places to visit in the United Kingdom, English customs and facilities.

People coming to language club tell volunteers about their customs and language too, so volunteers learn a lot about life in other places.

New volunteers are always welcome - you don't need to have taught before or know other languages except English. The main skills needed are to want to help others and to enjoy working in a team.

The staff team who regularly volunteer already are able to offer support to one person or a small group of people if they have enough helpers.

Anyone who would like to be a helper can text Martin or telephone him on 07535503780 (evenings) or 01778 561707.

If people know anyone who would like to come along to language club, meet new people who can help them and improve English skills, please pass on this information. There is no need to book a place.
