Latest photos of Spalding Western Relief Road reveal the current state of work
Freshly-released images show an aerial view of a controversial construction project.
Construction for the Spalding Western Relief Road started in January 2022 — and the most recent pictures taken by Lincolnshire County Council, provide an update on the £110 million investment with work on the northern section now complete.
Labelled as ‘the road to nowhere’ by residents, the project has been designed to deliver a new route around the west side of Spalding – however it has only received funding for the northern section.
The large bridge has also been built to a specific height to allow for the possibility of electrification of the railway line in the future.
Despite being complete, the bridge will not be open for traffic until the rest of the relief road is completed — which is likely to be well into the next decade, with no funding in place.
The northern section has also involved the construction of a new roundabout on Spalding Road, Pinchbeck.
In connection with the same project, Two Plank Bridge, which was a popular route for dog walkers and students that spanned the Vernatt’s Drain between Pinchbeck and Spalding, is set to open in a couple of weeks– after it was removed in March 2022.
