Lincolnshire Police raise "serious concerns" with shopkeeper who has applied to sell alcohol at a Spalding store

A shopkeeper who was jailed after fleeing the country for five years should not be able to sell alcohol say police.

Officers have lodged objections over Amar Salar's application for the premises licence for Delicja, Unit 2 , 20 Westlode Street, Spalding.

Police have told South Holland District Council's panel of the committee of the Licensing Authority that Mr Salar's history is concerning and that it would undermine crime prevention.

Within evidence submitted in a report to Thursday's meeting, officers shared a newspaper report which states that Salar was sentenced to two months in prison in July 2017 for failing to surrender to custody five years earlier.

He had been due to appear at Swindon Crown Court in October 2012 on charges of breaching a trademark and money laundering. These charges were dropped in 2017 after Swindon Borough Council offered no evidence as it did not know how to get hold of witnesses in the case.

The report to Thursday's meeting states: "Lincolnshire Police believes that the evidence shows that there are some serious concerns with Mr Salar and that if the transfer is granted the prevention of crime licensing objection will be undermined.

"He was in charge of a premises when illegal tobacco products were found. The premises was licenced, Mr Salar was in control but not the premises holder. Some months later illegal tobacco products were then found stored at his home address under floor boards.

"Mr Salar then failed to attend court and left the country for a number of years. When he did return he was sentenced to two months imprisonment for failing to surrender."

The premises licence for the unit is currently held by Mohammed Salih Attuf, the report states.
