Spalding's new Lidl store on target to open this year
Lidl’s brand new Spalding supermarket is taking shape on a site off Holbeach Road.
The main shell of the building appears complete but site works are ongoing.
No date has been given for the start of trading although work is on target.
A spokesman for Lidl said: “We’re still on track to open before the end of the year.”
Ground preparation works got underway in January with construction starting in the spring.
Lidl anticipate the new store will create up to 40 new jobs.
The company says the Holbeach Road store will run in addition to its existing store on Winsover Road.
The new supermarket will have features including an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing, customer toilets and baby changing facilities.
The store will have 2,123sq m of floor space and provide 148 parking spaces with five for the disabled and eight family spaces. There will be 24 cycle spaces.
In 2017, Lidl said it needed to build a new store because its business has seen “exponential growth” in the UK since its Winsover Road store opened.
A spokesman said then: “It is our strong belief that a new store will be of huge benefit to the community.”
Plans for the new Lidl were opposed by four corner shopkeepers, who organised a petition, but the company’s planning application was passed by South Holland District Council in July 2018.
Agents for the development said at the time: “The unit is proposed in the northern half of the site, with the southern half providing customer parking. The servicing area is proposed in the north west of the site.
“Vehicular access, via Holbeach Road, is on the southern boundary of the site which also provides level pedestrian access. This layout has been chosen to make efficient use of the site, and allows for areas of landscaping around the boundaries.”
