Driver admits causing the death of 20-year-old Ellie Sanders at Toft
A 28-year-old man who admitted causing the death of a young woman will be sentenced at crown court.
Ben Gibson, now living at Barrowfield Drive, Stamford but who was living in North Road, Bourne at the time, caused the death of Ellie Sanders by driving his BMW M2 carelessly two days after Christmas in 2019.
Ellie, who lived in Wittering, had got engaged to be married just days before she died, when her partner Conor Munsey, from Bourne, proposed to her on her 20th birthday.
Ellie was a care assistant for Wright Care at Home in Stamford.
Lou Johnson, prosecuting before district judge Peter Veits sitting at Boston Magistrates' Court this morning (Wednesday, April 20), said the crash happened on the A6121 Lound Road at Toft.
She said that although there was no evidence that Gibson had been using his phone at the time of the collision, he had been using it shortly before, and she asked that the case be sent for sentence to the crown court where a greater punishment can be imposed.
It was also said it was accepted Gibson's car had gone into the opposing lane.
Judge Veits said it was a 'borderline case' but it was his view that it was "way beyond momentary inattention".
He said that nothing he or the crown court could do could put the clock back.
Gibson was sent to Lincoln Crown Court for sentence on a date to be arranged and was allowed unconditional bail.
