Weston resident crashed Mercedes into bollard

Residents in Weston were alerted when a Mercedes crashed into a bollard in High Road, a court was told.

The car’s horn automatically sounded and its airbags were deployed during the incident which happened on the evening of January 8.

An onlooker called police and driver Matthew Nisbet was described as being “incoherent”, Boston Magistrates’ Court was told.

When police arrived, he was also unsteady on his feet, his eyes were glazed and there was a strong smell of alcohol coming from his vehicle, prosecutor Shelley Wilson told the bench on Wednesday.

“He was asked if he’d had a drink – he said no,” said Miss Wilson.

“He said he hadn’t been involved in a road traffic collision and didn’t want to give [a breath test].

“He kept denying that he was involved.”

Nisbet, of Fletcher Close, Weston, was arrested for failing to provide a sample and was charged with the offence after again refusing at the police station.

He pleaded guilty in court.

Carrie Simpson, mitigating, said her client had not been thinking straight.

“He’s a 27-year-old man with no previous convictions and a history of mental health issues,” she added.

“On the night, he had deliberately crashed the car. This was not disclosed at the scene.”

Nisbet was banned from driving for 18 months, fined £700 and ordered to pay £280 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

A charge of having no insurance was adjourned to March 15 to enable the defendant to provide documentary proof.
