McDonald’s support Sutton Bridge Wombles in row over A17 lay-by litter picking
McDonald’s says it is ‘disappointed’ that volunteer litter pickers have been told to stop looking after two busy lay-bys.
The fast food giant has come out in support of Sutton Bridge Wombles Andy Tilley and Deanne Gough - who were last week told to leave the two lay-bys on the A17 close to the firm’s Long Sutton restaurant.
Andy and Deanne were left ‘gobsmacked’ after they were asked to stop litter picking the two sites by South Holland District Council last week - which is also removing their tyre litter bins.
Long Sutton Parish Council says it wrote to the authority last year to express concerns for the pair’s welfare and feels the district council do more.
A spokesman from McDonalds said: “We have worked in collaboration with Andy and Deanne for years to keep our local area tidy. It is disappointing to learn that there are now restrictions in place regarding the lay-bys but we will continue to patrol the area around our restaurant to keep it clean.
“At McDonald’s we strive to be a good neighbour in the communities we serve. We take our responsibility around litter very seriously, which is why for over 40 years, McDonald’s restaurant teams, including Long Sutton, have carried out daily litter patrols in local communities, collecting all litter not just McDonald’s branded packaging.
“We would like to thank Andy and Deanne for their dedication to keeping the local community a litter free space and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them.”
Andy and Deanne collect more than 100 bags of rubbish each week by clearing eight sites along the stretch of the A17 between Sutton Bridge and Long Sutton.
