Spalding event encourages more than a thousand people to 'give it a go'
More than a thousand people tried out something a bit different at a special event in Spalding.
The Give it a Go day, organised by South Holland District Council’s communities team, saw crowds gather at the town’s Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on Sunday.
There were a host of free activities to try, ranging from American football and karate to crafting and go karting - and even a climbing wall.
Coun Gary Taylor, district council portfolio holder for communities and facilities, said: “It was exactly as it said on the tin, with everyone having a go at such a broad range of activities.
“Having spoken to the people on the stands it seems they were signing up a lot of people. It was a very successful and positive event.”
Although the event was free, donations were welcomed for council chairman Paul Redgate’s chosen charity CPSL Mind.
Coun Redgate organised and played in a football match on the day between Whaplode Drove Rovers and Park Farm Pumas, and was even given a yellow card for handball.
He said: “It was a real success with more than £400 raised for CPSL Mind.
“Some of the people who took part in the match are incredibly supportive of the charity having used the service themselves, so I would like to thank everyone who came along and donated too.
"It was encouraging to see so many coming along and taking the opportunity to see what South Holland has to offer
"I hope that the groups and societies who were there have an uptake in numbers as a result."
