Restoration for Moulton Seas End war memorial
The newly grade II listed war memorial in Moulton Seas End is to undergo a sympathetic restoration in time for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.
Work will involve cleaning the memorial and repainting the lettering.
Moulton Parish Council clerk Carol Mackenzie said councillors were delighted to be informed by Historic England that Moulton Seas End War Memorial had been added to the list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest, which means it is now listed as grade II.
Mrs Mackenzie said: "The land on which it stands was donated by local farmer William Pocklington and made from two different colours of granite, built by stonemason Henry Tagg of Holbeach for the cost of £169, which was paid for by public subscriptions.
"The war memorial was dedicated on January 20, 1920 by the Rev Charles John Selwyn Ward, of All Saints' Church, Moulton, and the Rev Harry W. Hart, minister of the Methodist Church in Spalding.
"Several people were in attendance."
She said the parish council has applied for listed monument consent to have the war memorial cleaned and the wording repainted, keeping it as close to the original as possible.
The parish council has agreed the works should be completed in time for November.
Mrs Mackenzie said: "With the centenary of WWI this year, it is hoped that the attendance will flourish bigger than previous years at the memorial service being held in November.
"All will be most welcome."
The memorial stands beside Seas End Road, in the heart of the village, and the upper pillar lists the names of 22 men who perished in World War 1.
There is a separate dedication on a lower step to the three people who died in WWII.
