NCS students clean up Weston playing field
National Citizen Service (NCS) students carried out a "first class" one-off two-day clean-up at Weston Playing Fields, using monies they have raised to carry out projects they have identified.
The group worked last week at the Small Drove site by repainting play equipment, removing graffiti from the skate park area, cleaning the four benches, cutting back some pathways and opening up the pond to plant flowers.
Coun Chris Dicks, Weston Parish Council chairman who lives in the village, said: "NCS approached us. They have projects while the students are on summer holidays.
"The main organiser was Stefan Bunder who lives a stone's throw from the park. He approached me and asked what we thought. The offer from this group is first class."
He said about any incidents of graffiti or vandalism: "It's no more than average. Some graffiti is classed as art, but it depends on what it says.
"With litter, like anywhere, sometimes it's bad, other times, not so bad. We've put extra bins in there to highlight the issue.
"It hasn't suffered too badly recently."
Coun Dicks said the work fulfils a useful service doing jobs that would have needed to been performed soon, like paintwork on a slide.
Although this latest clean-up idea did not originate with the parish council, he added it's part of a process to make residents aware of what is being done for them: "It's something for the community.
"We do let them know we are doing things for them. We're trying to promote things. A parish council is only as good as how it deals with someone's complaint, as most people only contact us to complain."
