New foyer for Spalding's Broad Street Methodist Church?

A new entrance foyer could be built between Spalding’s Broad Street Methodist Church and its neighbouring hall.

Managing trustees of the church have applied to South Holland District Council for planning consent.

The project could be the icing on the cake following extensive building work since 2013 when church leaders began a £750,000 project to bring its buildings up to date for worshippers and community groups.

Plans submitted to the council explain that the redevelopment of Broad Street Methodist Church is an ongoing process.

The application envisages demolition of the existing entrance area to the hall and small porch to be be replaced by a new foyer between the church and hall - increasing floor area by 67sq m.

Applicants say there are a number of issues that the proposals seek to address:

1 Steps at the entrance to the church currently present a physical barrier;

2 Space is restricted in the small vestibule, which does not give people the opportunity to gather before entering the worship area;

3Circulation between the church, hall and ancillary spaces is awkward and makes it difficult for people to find their way around the facilities

4 Outside space between the church and hall is considered "uninviting".

The church dates from 1887 and it is believed the hall was built a year later following demolition of the original chapel and manse on the site.

In a written statement to the council , the applicants say: "Whilst the congregation for the traditional worship service is ageing, a more modern informal worship is attracting a younger age group.

"Following a decision to close the other Methodist church within Spalding (on St Thomas's Road) the two congregations have joined together.

"The church premises are well used by a variety of church and community groups throughout the week and make a positive contribution to the life of the town."

A previous consent for a foyer expired last April.

* The former St Thomas's Road Methodist Church was sold to neighbouring St Norbert's last year.
