Owner of new Donington shop hopes to open soon

The owner of a new shop in Donington, which will also see the reopening of the village’s post office, hopes to begin business soon.

Budgens is moving into the former Bargain Booze outlet in High Street, which closed without warning in early December 2019, also forcing the post office located inside to shut.

Seelan Thambirajah, owner of St Neots-based MSP and Noble Group, which will run the new store on behalf of Budgens, said he was hopeful for an opening date of the end of February or beginning of March for the shop.

The post office will be situated inside.

He said: “We hope to open the post office by the end of March.

“It is taking longer at the moment with COVID, but next week we will meet with the Post Office to do the assessment and rebranding of the store.”

And he has lots of plans to support the local community with free fruit every Monday for local school children over six weeks, donations to charities and support for the Young Dons Football Club.

In Market Deeping, the town post office has suddenly closed, leaving many residents in limbo as it looks like it could be six months before the post office reopens with new owners.

The branch, in Church Street, shut on January 6, due to the resignation of the previous postmaster – with the nearest post offices now being Deeping St James, Northborough or Langtoft.

The town has also lost all its banks, with Barclays the last to go in 2019.

District and town councillor, Bob Broughton, said: “It is disappointing that the post office has closed but there is hope, from what I have heard, that someone is going to take it on but that could take a while so we have to be patient.”

Coun Virginia Moran, who also sits on the district and town council, has been trying to get a new cash machine
instated for the town, including looking at if the old phone box could be used for this.

She said: “I wish the current post office owners all the best for any future business and hope the process for the new owners is successful and look forward to seeing the new post office open in the summer.”

Market Deeping mayor, Joshua Yarham, added that he was aware that all new tenants have to go through a process to reopen the post office services.

“I have heard many concerns about the post office shutting but it is a temporary closure and I hope it will be resolved as soon as possible,” he said.
