Oscars Wine Bar in Spalding has finally opened its doors after Covid-19 restrictions were eased on Monday

A new pub has opened its doors over a year after it originally planned to.

Oscars, on New Road in Spalding, was transformed into a bar after owners Nick Bond and Trudy Edington converted it from its old estate agent set-up.

Having had their planned opening in March 2020 pushed back by the pandemic, Mr Bond is happy to have thrown open the doors – and was pleased with Oscars’ first night.

“It was nice to hear the feedback from people that did come, not only while they were here, but afterwards,” he said.

“Sometimes people say nice things to your face and then leave and say they aren’t coming back. But we made some phone calls and everyone was thumbs up, saying they’d come back again.”

The owners will be serving a variety of drinks as they attempt to work out their new target audience.

“We call it a wine bar, but we serve plenty. There are six draft beers, two cocktails on draft and that’s going to end up as four,” said Mr Bond.

“We’ve got cheaper bottles of wine and more expensive ones for people who know their wines.

“If people are going to be regulars and ask me for a specific type of wine, I’ll get it in for them. It’s a bit suck-it-and-see at the moment.”

There will also be a range of spirits and gins on offer, as well as a cooled downstairs drinking area.

Oscars’ owners want to provide a relaxed atmosphere for customers at the start of their nights out.

Mr Bond said: “We’re going to have some chilled background music, so people can come in with their girlfriends, with their wives, as groups of girls, groups of lads and have a conversation without having to raise their voices.

“We wanted something a bit different, and hopefully this will provide that.

“We know a lot of people from the area, so they’re all as excited about this opening as I was. It’s something different for them as well.”

The pub has been affectionately named after Mr Bond’s four-year-old grandson Oscar.

“Every time we have him on a Wednesday, he asks, ‘grandad, can we go to my bar?,” laughed Mr Bond.

“He loves it.”
