Impressive Spalding Fire Service stats release as station hunts for new on-call staff

A station is on the search for new on-call firefighters after a very successful 2021.

Spalding’s fire service has released a number of statistics, highlighting the variety of tasks they have to perform throughout a calendar year.

Staff attended 541 incidents last year, which included 181 fires

They also received 166 special service calls, which include road traffic collisions, animal rescues and water rescues.

There were also 171 fire alarm activations in the area.

Harry Drury, a firefighter at the Spalding station and a district councillor for Spalding St Mary’s, said: “We’re very pleased with the way we’ve performed as a station.

“We’re a very close group. We always ensure that training is carried out on an extremely regular basis across all of the areas we’re required to.

“We’ve had a quieter start to 2022, which has been good. Everyone is extremely excited for the year ahead.”

This year, Spalding Fire will be focusing on fire risk assessments. These allow the crew to identify areas of higher risk, meaning they can try to prevent incidents before they occur.

With that in mind, the station is now looking for new on-call staff to help them with their efforts.

Recruitment opened yesterday (Wednesday), with roles open to anyone who lives and/or works within five minutes of the station at Elloe Avenue.

On-call staff must be aged 18 or over and have a good level of fitness.

There will be a give-it-a-go day at the station on January 29, and anyone interested in going along can book a spot via Eventbrite links on Spalding Fire’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

“People can come along to the station and have a go at job-related tests,” said Mr Drury.

“They can speak to the crew, find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter and find out how enjoyable it is.

“You don’t just get to serve your local community, but also learn new skills and become part of an extremely close team.

“For a lot of people they can fulfil a childhood dream while continuing to work in their day job.

“It’s a good extra income at the same time as keeping fit.”
