New Spalding tip site could beneficial to town - but no immediate plans

A new site could be the answer to queuing issues at Spalding’s tip, according to one councillor.

Traffic problems at Spalding Household Waste Recycling Centre, on West Marsh Road, have been well documented - particularly on Friday mornings.

Gary Taylor, who represents Spalding South on Lincolnshire County Council, has witnessed them himself in recent weeks.

He now believes that a new site - possibly in the east of the district - could be beneficial.

However, he has also urged users to plan ahead when they visit the centre - and to make better use of quieter periods.

“I think long term we do need a new site, a new location,” he said.

“It’s a main road into Spalding. Historically when it was built or designed, it was not such an industrial main road with such heavy traffic, so it is an issue there.”

He also touted possible alternatives, and said inspiration could be taken from district and county councillor Jack Tyrrell - who organises some waste collections at weekends in Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge.

Coun Taylor added: “There’s maybe some scope for doing that, some more localised collections in some villages rather than driving to Spalding - which we know is time consuming, there’s the cost of petrol, and the environmental impact of that.”

However, the county council has said that no plans are in place to relocate the Spalding tip.

Mike Reed, head of waste at the council, said: “We ask the public to consider when they choose to visit a recycling centre, and avoid busy times if they can.

“Fridays and Saturdays do appear to be the busiest periods; however, we are carrying out traffic surveys at Spalding which will help us to establish when the busy periods are so we can inform the public as to when the quietest periods are.

“Staff on site also continue to work hard to move visitors through the site as quickly as possible.

“There are no immediate plans to relocate Spalding Household Waste Recycling Centre, as considerable budget would be required, but this is constantly under review.”
