Here's our latest batch of news from clubs and societies across our district...
Surfleet Ladybirds
At the Ladybirds meeting in December we made Christmas crackers courtesy of member Jean Bratley. It was a lovely way to start the Christmas celebrations. Thanks to Jean for all her hard work and patience. Afterwards we had two quizzes. The refreshments were mince pies enjoyed with a tea or coffee. As you can imagine it was quite a noisy meeting, much hilarity and chatting going on. Everyone said that they’d had a lovely time and were ready for the festive season.
The January meeting saw us at The Crown in Surfleet celebrating our Christmas dinner. As always, Zara did us proud and we thank her and her staff for a delicious meal and service. The new programme was distributed and everyone thought there was a good choice of outings and meetings. If you would like a copy the Post Office have some. Thank you, again to Jean Bratley for the printing of the programmes and Heather for all her hard work in putting them together.
At our next meeting on Tuesday 14th February we have Justin Grimshaw from Pendragon Antiques in Spalding. Do try to come along, if you have anything you would like to have valued he will be happy to do so.
We are a non-religious, non- political group for ladies of any age, who meet on the second Tuesday of the month at the Fraiser room next to St Laurence Church. We have interesting speakers and outings and we have a catch up with friends, old and new, over a cup of tea or coffee (with a biscuit or two!). You are more than welcome to come along and see what we are about.
Membership is just £3.50 a year and £1 per meeting. Visitors and guests are welcome for a small charge of £1.50. Any enquiries you may have about our group please contact Chairlady, Hannah Avery on 01775680646 or the Secretary Heather Girdlestone on 01775821130.
Spalding Photographic Society
On Wednesday 11th January Spalding Photographic Society played hosted to a presentation on wildlife photography given by Andrew Hayes, ARPS,EFIAP/g,DPAGB, PPSA. In addition to those present, members of other Lincolnshire Camera clubs attended by ZOOM.
Andy made a brief introduction of his background, having been fortunate to live in Kenya from 1965 to 1967, when his father was seconded from the Royal Air Force to the Kenya Air Force as an instructor. The family fully explored the country during their stay and he developed a life long interest in wildlife. Now living in Scotland he takes every opportunity to photograph the local wildlife, and prior to the pandemic, he regularly visited India and Kenya.
After a brief discussion about the camera equipment he uses, and the research he does prior to each trip, the main part of the presentation consisted of the Wildlife images he had taken in Scotland and during his travels.
The opening section dealt with golden eagles, ospreys and mammals around Scotland, with some sequences being set to appropriate music. Andy mentioned that patience is the key to wildlife photography citing the occasion when he spent 17 hours over three days in a hide, only to see the golden eagle for 30 seconds and getting only five images.
The second section dealt with photographing tigers in various parks in India.
He illustrated the effectiveness of the tiger’s camouflage with a story that his guide pointed out to him a tiger watching them from a distance between two rocks. Andy could not see the tiger himself but took several images of the landscape in the direction indicated by the guide. It was not until Andy returned home to the UK and processed/enlarged the images that he actually was actually able to see the tiger.
The final section covered his time spent in Kenya in recent years and his range of images covered most of the local wildlife and birds he encountered during his tours around the national parks.
At the end of the evening, Gordon Fawley, Chairman, thanked Andy for his presentation and remarked on the high quality of the images he had shown to the audience.
Andy does not charge for his presentations but asks for any donations to Lisa’s School (lisasschool.org), a school for 3to 5 year old children at Archer’s Post in Northern Kenya.”
Pinchbeck Mother’s Union
Members were pleased to welcome many visitors to the Christmas Sing Along with Trevor. The meeting included performances by Pinchbeck Women’s Institute along with poems and songs.
The entertainers were thanked by Janet, who also thanked members for the goods brought for the Agape food bank.
In January, members had a coffee morning at Janet’s home when there was very good attendance. The Christmas donation box at the Sing Along raised £75 which will go towards the Flower Festival in May.
Hope read a letter from the 60 year link Mother’s Union. in Queensland, Australia. They sent a Blessing Box full of small gifts and members were each able to choose one.
