Spalding magician overcomes Tourettes to perform Bourne magic show

A radio engineer overcame Tourettes Syndrome to perform a two-hour magic show in Bourne in front of friends, family and members of the public.

Chris Hicks (24), of Spalding, performed the Evening of Magic, to an audience of 40, on Saturday at Bourne’s historic Red Hall.

On Monday, Chris said: “The show went extremely well on Saturday and I got a wonderful response from the people who attended.”

Speaking before the event, he said: “It’s me finally doing a public show of things that have inspired me.

“I’m testing the water. I’ve done events for different charities, but this is something different.”

Chris, who is employed by Bourne-based Roadphone and National Radio Bank, works on live events, both in this country and abroad.

One of his jobs last year was at the UEFA National League in Portugal.

He also services customers’ radio equipment.

He said: “It’s a two-hour show, with an interval in the middle.

“I’ve been rehearsing the tricks for the last few months as and when I get the opportunity.”

Chris’s great uncle Colin Ward said: “It’s quite remarkable that he’s produced and promoted this event all on his own despite his affliction.

“He is incredibly bright with hidden talents. He understands and works on the most complicated radio projects for his job and can perform the most amazing and complicated magic tricks.

“I’m so pleased for him. He’s done it all himself.

“It proves that even such handicaps should not hold you back if you put your mind to it!

“And you don’t really need Simon Cowell to get on in life.”
