Baytree Garden Centre in Weston launches Instagram page for well known exotic resident Alfie the Green Winged Macaw

A popular garden centre resident is now an aspiring social media star - with his very own Instagram page.

Alfie the Green Winged Macaw, who lives at Baytree Garden Centre in Weston, has celebrated turning 25 by opening up an account on the popular platform.

The well-known exotic character currently has a little over followers after the account was made last week - but it’s hoped that number will soon fly when word gets out.

Baytree manager Cameron Whitworth said: “We made the account for Alfie to celebrate his birthday but also because he is very popular with customers.

“A lot of people think an awful lot of him, as do we and he’s part of the furniture here. Quite a lot of customers do visit Baytree just to meet Alfie.

“We noticed there were a lot of other Instagram pages for animals and, as he is a bit of a celebrity, we thought, why not?. We are hoping that by creating a social media account, people will get to know him better.”

Popular parrot Alfie has been a resident at the garden centre for 24 years and Cameron hopes he will continue to entertain customers for many more years to come - with his breed generally living for 60-75 years.

Cameron added: “He’s a good character and I think that’s why people like him. He’s exotic and colourful and very friendly – despite his looks he’s harmless.

“I’m pleased for him and it’s about time – why shouldn’t he have an Instagram page? Alfie is such a character he deserves one.”

The staff at Baytree will be uploading content of Alfie being his ‘silly self’ and entertaining customers with his day to day activities.
