This latest incident has prompted further comments about the safety at the junction — which many believe should have been a roundabout when the road was built.

Posting on Facebook, Karen Clare said: “This should have been a round about when it was built. It's a death trap trying to get across. How many more accidents have to happen here before the highways put it as it should have been?”

Lucy Jerwood added: “Death junction strikes again. This is where the money should have gone, putting in a new roundabout. Not messing around with Springfields roundabout!”
