Pinchbeck Parish Council bemoan the lack of lorry parks - which they say leaves drivers 'pooing in laybys'

A lack of facilities for international lorry drivers is making the area look ‘archaic’.

That is the view of Coun Ann Savage, one of the Pinchbeck parish councillors who would like to see a lorry park in the area.

Concerns were raised about drivers being forced to use laybys to sleep after delivering to the area - which also leads to defecating and littering by the roadside - at Monday’s meeting.

“There are no showers or bathrooms. We pride ourselves on having all these HGVs in Pinchbeck but we’re not providing facilities,” Coun Savage said. “If you drive a lorry in Europe there’s always somewhere to use the facilities. They’re there by the side of the road. We look archaic by comparison.

“They’re pooing in the laybys on the way to Peterborough and this is not acceptable. We’re failing them.

“This is not just a Pinchbeck issue, it’s a Spalding issue.”

Pinchbeck-based FreshLinc currently runs a lorry park, but councillors said using facilities comes with a charge.

Further north is Sutterton Truck Stop, which offers free parking for two hours followed by a charge of £25 per 24 hours.

“We want them to deliver here. They’re coming from all over the world and there’s nowhere to park. It’s disgusting,” said Coun Terry Moore.

Coun Peter Ruysen suggested speaking to local businesses to see if they would help finance a lorry park.

Chairman Coun James Avery said: “We have to see if South Holland District Council have the appetite to have a lorry park,” he said.

“Pinchbeck Parish Council can push this forward and talk to businesses.”

Lincolnshire county councillor Liz Sneath said: “We have these lorry drivers who come here from all over the world and they have to go to the lavatory on the side of the road. It’s shameful,” she said.

“They have to park up for the night in laybys and go to the toilet by the side of the road, and leave their litter there in bags. Or sometimes not in bags.”

The lack of facilities sees some HGVs park along Wardentree Lane to use Morrisons, which causes congestion.
