PHOTO GALLERY: Civil war in Sutton St James at exciting re-enactment weekend

Battle lines were drawn in Sutton St James over the bank holiday weekend as the Sealed Knot re-enactment team descended on the village.

The thrilling three day event, which ran over Saturday, Sunday and Monday (May 4, 5, and 6), saw the group re-create the turbulent events of the English Civil War.

It was a time that saw the men of Sutton St James stand 'shoulder to shoulder' with the men of Crowland, resisting the forces of parliament in support of King Charles I.

Rev Mike Ongyerth, vicar for the Elloe Fen Group, which includes the church of St James the Greater in the village, was involved in the organising of the event.

He said: "There was a real feel-good factor. The weather could have been a bit warmer but all ages got involved.

"We found out there is a connection between Sutton St James and Crowland so on the final day, they marched off towards Crowland.

"There was a living history camp set out where they were cooking recipes from the 17th century, along with 17th century cricket and games."

Rev Ongyerth has also worked alongside the Sealed Knot team bringing re-enactment events to Crowland, which is planned again for September 14 and 15 this year.

At the bank holiday event, there were demos of drumming, pike drill, and some musket fire (with two and a half kilos of gunpowder used).

Also on the Sunday, a church service was held, where the Sealed Knot joined the congregation in full dress, hats and period costume.

Chairman of Sutton St James parish council, Coun Bill Harrison, said: "The event was a good effort that should not go unnoticed."
